The Welcome Mat
—a poem by J. Pharoah Doss

The Welcome Mat

when asked
when was the last time
I spoke with my daughter
I shrug and reply

we hardly speak

why not?
they always pry

because I hear it
in her voice

hear what?
the idiots ask confused

then I tell them

I hear
the meaninglessness
of my existence
in her life

I’m outnumbered
wrestling enough demons
at night
and one more
might pin my weary soul
to the welcome mat of hell
